In the field of linguistics, the DCT has emerged as one of the most significant tools for analyzing learners' behaviors in communication. Participants were 46 CLKs at the upper-intermediate level who responded to MQs, DCTs and RIs. They were asked to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. Then they were invited to attend a RI where they were asked to think about their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that, on average, the CLKs resisted native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even when they could produce patterns that closely resembled native speakers. In addition, they were aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal factors like their identities, personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing life histories. They also referred to external factors, such as relationships and advantages. They described, for example, how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social norms at their university.

This will help them better understand the effects of different cultures on the behavior of students and classroom interactions of students in L2.
